Usually when an area is redeveloped, you see a bunch of shiny new buildings, swaddled in glass and packed with amenities. When considering renovation of the space that eventually became Printworks London though, they realized the gem (and the eventual concept) stemmed from the old building itself.
Printworks London occupies a building that was once legitimately a printing factory. Across 16 acres and 6 facilities with a max capacity of 6000, once the Metro and the Evening Standard, two local free tabloids, were printed in what was then the largest printing facility in Western Europe.
Now, with the bones of the old factory still in place, a new purpose is given to the massive facility. Printworks London aims to be a premier art and music facility, as well as a nightlife anchor to its formerly industrial East London neighborhood.
The opening night of the facility during the first weekend of February featured a lineup of Loco Dice, The Martinez Brothers, and Seth Troxler playing a 7 hour back-to-back-to-back set, a gigantic undertaking befitting a massive space.
The opening night’s packed halls reflected the voracious appetite London has for a facility like Printworks London, as well as the versatility of the sometimes unusually shaped, but always cavernous, spaces.
