The year 1999. Clinton was President, Y2K was a legitimate concern, and the Internet was still the domain of nerds and the military. It was also the year a couple guys in Atlanta were kicked out of high school for “promoting a dangerous subculture.” Suddenly, with all that free time at their disposal, they did what teenagers already in the punk culture do: they started a band.
Eighteen years later, this is no mere passion project. Black Lips are now eight albums deep and on the verge of releasing their ninth album, Satan’s Grafitti Or God’s Art?. Check out the latest single from that album:
The band also has a raucous live performance reputation. At any given show, you can look forward to banging rock, amped crowds, and probably a view of guitarist Cole Alexander’s butt.
They’ve brought this act to six continents so far and hope to finally hit that seventh continent (Antarctica, of course) and become the first rock band to ever play on all seven continents. If you’re thinking that Metallica already did it, bassist Jared Swilley has opinions on that,
“Just when we were securing the funding, Metallica sniped us. They took a boat, probably a gold plated Versace boat, down there. But they actually didn’t play on land, and they didn’t play with amps, so technically they haven’t played Antarctica. Metallica hasn’t beat us yet.”
Before they adventure to icy continents though, they will be playing at Philadelphia’s Union Transfer this Wednesday.
