While it’s certainly possible to go to metal shows all year round, it can get annoying during the winter months. You’re torn between freezing to death outside in the cold with no jacket or waiting seven eternities in the coat check line. Even worse, trying to hold your jacket in the pit. *shudders*

Dysrhythmia / Sabbath Assembly / Wholewrecker / Fell Ruin | Kung Fu Necktie | go to show
Dysrhythmia certainly are not for the faint of heart but for fans of jaw-dropping musicianship, this show is not to be missed. The progressive instrumental outfit has not lost any steam in their 17 year existence, as evidenced by the crushing The Veil of Control released last September. Colin Marston’s bass playing is truly something to behold.

Mastodon / Opeth / Gojira / Eagles of Death Metal | The Electric Factory Outdoor Stage | go to show
This lineup is almost unfairly stacked. Some might say that Mastodon are past their prime, but I would respectfully disagree. Fresh off the release of Emperor of Sand, their heaviest album since 2008’s Crack the Skye, the band is poised to win over fans who weren’t pleased with their last two records. With support coming from Opeth and Gojira, who could easily be headlining tours of their own, this show is sure to be worth it.

Nothing like a good ole-fashioned death metal show. Veteran groups Amon Amarth and Goatwhore are two of the most consistent bands out right now and have a combined 45 years of touring experience. This evening will surely be a beer soaked circle pit of a night.

The Los Angeles-based hardcore mainstays are now in their 15th year as a band. Terror’s frontman Scott Vogel is revered in the scene for keeping things fun and positive. His stage banter is also legendary, including gems such as: “We need to elevate the maximum stage dive potential!” To truly find out what that means, go see a Terror show.

Black Sabbath-inspired The Sword draw heavily from classic metal of all varieties. Starting out as a doom metal band, the Texas-based four piece has slowly transformed into something much more dynamic. Their most recent release, High Country, is markedly different from their heavier sound yet still hearkens back to their original influences.
