Climate Day LA

[UPDATE June 26th, 2017] Unfortunately the organizers of the event have cancelled the evening portion of the event and provided the following statement:

We’re looking forward to the Climate Day LA daytime conference (more than 1100+ have registered so far!) and benefit gala with Moby, but due to unforeseen circumstances, the evening concert portion of our event with Neon Indian, Weyes Blood, and Eric Wareheim has been cancelled. All concert ticket holders will be refunded.

We have added more speakers, pop-up installations, and more to the daytime conference earlier in the day. We’re looking forward to gaining insight from interactive panels and engaging attendees to take action on climate!

Bummer. But if you can make it, still check out the daytime conference!

If you’ve been staying up to date with the news, you’ll know the most high profile recent climate news has been not good for climate change advocates. The news that President Donald Trump intends to withdraw the United States from the landmark Paris Climate Agreement is a blow.

There are a few mitigating factors though. First, the US can’t leave the agreement until 2019 at the earliest, which means that Trump’s announcement was effective in a geopolitical sense, but not in an immediate climate sense. Second, several state governors have formed a coalition of states that intend to uphold the Paris Climate Agreement in their states, including California, New York, and Washington. Booyah. Third, despite political machinations, the economic reality of renewable power is leading to many parts of the US wildly exceeding wind and solar power generation goals, especially in some of the reddest states in the nation.

Oh, and also climate leaders are still out there fighting for change, including through the second annual Climate Day LA. The gathering is in support of the Path To Positive LA initiative for climate solutions and is presented by Climate Resolve, ecoAmerica, FORM, and IHEARTCOMIX. During the free daytime event, over 1500 leaders, climate advocates, and local activists will come together to form strategies for the Los Angeles area to help combat climate change.

In the evening is when the fun starts. There’s a benefit gala supporting Path to Positive LA with a set by Moby. After that, there will be a concert presented by 89.9 KCRW at The Theatre with Neon Indian, Weyes Blood, Eric Wareheim (DJ set, recently seen as Arnold from Master of None), and more.

The whole event is for a great cause. Even if you can’t contribute more monetarily, bring ideas, bring enthusiasm, and bring hope for the environment.
