Earl Sweatshirt – Some Rap Songs
We’re starting off New Music Friday with a bang. Earl Sweatshirt’s newest album, Some Rap Songs, is somehow simultaneously avant-garde jazz and hip-hop. The album is peaceful, introspective, and at times, blissfully lo-fi.
Alessia Cara – The Pains of Growing
You may recognize Alessia Cara’s inescapable, familiar tones from her feature on huge hit single with Zedd, or her own breakout success on her single “Scars to Your Beautiful”. After 3 years, her sophomore album has arrived, with music that is somehow familiar yet diverse, featuring her voice as the shining star.
J.I.D. – Dicaprio 2
The East Atlanta-bred rapper J.I.D. was part of XXL’s freshman class, and this new album proves he earned his spot. Dicaprio 2 ranges from aggressive ragers to lyrical quips; The production of this album is mesmerizing.
Ex:Re – Ex:Re
Loud & Quiet summed this release up the best: “Daughter fans looking for more of their panoramic leanings will be let down, but for everybody else this is a beautifully understated mood piece and Tonra [Ex:Re]’s finest work to date, with or without the band.”
Ski Mask the Slump God – Stokeley
This is Ski Mask The Slump God’s debut album, named Stokeley after his legal birth name. As yet another member of the XXL Freshman class, the features and production on this rap album include Lil Baby, Young Thug, and Lil Yachty and do not disappoint.
Black Thought – Streams of Thought Vol. 2
This is the second tape in a series of three; the first by Black Thought was released in June. Black Thought collaborated with producer Salaam Remi for this latest EP, showcasing his emcee skills and freestyle.
