brutally cold

But seriously, before we dive into this can we talk about the windchill of -6°F this morning in New York? That’s not a weather that I’d like to accept as okay. When the air outside hurts your face, that’s not okay.

That being said, this week is full of hardcore rap, blacker than black metal, doom, and a fun little bonus single from Oliver Tree.

Lessdoit!

cupcakKe – Ephorize

Some of the fastest, wittiest, and most hard-hitting rap today. You may recognize cupcakKe from her collaborations with Charli XCX, Pabllo Vittar, and Brooke Candy, but this up-and-comer needs no assistance on this 15 track, 46 minute masterpiece. You may mistake this record for college because she’s taking you to school. Probably don’t listen to “Duck Duck Goose” or a few other dirtier tracks with your parents…
Favorite tracks: “Cartoons” & “Fullest”

Shining – X – Varg Utan Flock

This is the black metal you were looking for. This Swedish band has been around 20+ years and as a fun side fact, the lead singer started it when he was 12. You don’t hear too many 12-year-olds into black metal. The new album is a mix of pain, anger, beauty, and pure evil music. If you’re looking for something to listen to on a nice tandem bike in the sunshine, this is not your album.
Favorite tracks: “Jag Är Din Fiende” & “Gyllene Portarnas Bro”

Summoning – With Doom We Come

If you’re on a journey to Middle Earth with a few of your friends and need something epic to listen to, Summoning’s got you covered. It’s metal, it’s folk, it’s doomy, and it’s unique. With new additions of midis and drum programming, it’s almost like you’ve been transported into a game made from one of Tolkien’s books.
Favorite tracks: “Carcharoth” & “Tar-Calion”

Watain – Trident Wolf Eclipse

Sweden just gets black metal. Watain is no exception. The power of this one comes from the straight up relentless power that it exudes. From the beginning to the end, this one does not let up. It’s fast, it’s angry, and it proves that some things really do get better with age. This twenty-year-old black metal band is just getting started.
Favorite tracks: “Towards the Sanctuary” & “Teufelsreich”

Sinistro – Sangue Cassia

Portuguese doom metal has arrived in 2018, and it’s a beast. This album is a cinematic doom-lovers wonderland and it comes with enough balanced beauty to it to make it feel brand new and exciting. Though it comes in at over an hour, the record never feels like it’s dragging and the production quality across the board is incredible.
Favorite tracks: “Cosmos Controle” & “Vento Sul”

BONUS SINGLE: Oliver Tree – “Upside Down”

This is by far the most upbeat on the list this week, so if the above didn’t tickle your fancy, this one’ll flip ya upside down. It’s got his signature distorted vocals, heavy electronic influence, and enough of a pop-dance vibe that’ll get anyone moving. This is the perfect song to end New Music Friday with.

See you next week! Hopefully in a temperature that doesn’t start with negative.
