Is there anything better than hearing about new venues gracing your beautiful city? Toronto has lost several beloved music venues over the course of the past year, but perhaps the city has finally reached a turning point. Over the next few years you’re going to get a bunch of new venues. And while they may only be at three locations, it’s still incredible news for any music lover.
Grand Symes & Scarlett Room
Opening November 2017
First built in 1933 as an incinerator, this venue is the is a combo deal with two venues in one. On the ground floor is the Grand Symes, a 5,600 square foot ballroom with vaulted ceilings. On the second floor is the 4,100 square foot Scarlett Room. It had sat in disrepair for 20 years until three women got together and signed a ten-year lease to bring this Art Deco masterpiece back to life as a venue and event space.
Centre of Gravity
Opening January 2018
The venue and circus academy at 1300 Gerrard Street East was first built as a 1914 vaudeville theater. On November 1st, the ownership changed hands, and it sounds like the owners will be putting an estimated $500k to transform the historic building into a community arts hub. Fingers are crossed that they can get the venue up and ready to rock for a 2018 New Year’s celebration.
Massey Hall, Centuries Bar & Lounge (expanded),
and a small “to-be-named venue”
Coming in Fall 2020
This one is three in one. Massey Hall is currently in the middle of getting a seven year, $107 million facelift because what concert hall built in 1894 doesn’t deserve a bit of pampering? The massive undertaking will come to fruition at some point in the fall of 2020 with not only an upgraded Massey Hall, but an expanded Centuries Bar & Lounge, and a yet to be named, 500 capacity venue in the south tower.
