In 2018, the North By Northeast Festival will be returning to Yonge-Dundas Square in downtown Toronto. After a revamp in 2016, the 23-year-old festival moved to the outskirts of town at Port Lands, but it seems that many concert-goers were not pleased with the location.
One of the main reasons for the initial move out to Port Lands was size. They just needed more room for all of the activities. In the return, it seems as though they’re going to try to be creative to add more space to downtown’s version of Times Square.

“We always loved presenting great free live music at Yonge and Dundas, but it became difficult to fit everyone and everything into the Square,” NXNE founder Michael Hollett told Billboard in an email. “We’re coming back and are incorporating the street itself into the event. We’re not just spilling onto the street, it’s part of the event’s design.”
At this point, the lineup is still being decided, but it sounds like many of the local musicians from the past will be returning.
The three big additions that NXNE’ers are enjoying are the live eSports events, the live talks, and comedy. It might be early to start planning, but mark your calendars for June 8 to 17, 2018.
