Hello my rock brethren!
Welcome to the new age of rock ‘n’ roll. Something happened last week that hasn’t happened in two and a half years, and I’m hoping that it’s a sign of changing times.
We’re not talking about the ‘unce unce unce’ of techno, we’re not talking about the sweet strumming of singer/songwriters, and nay, it doesn’t have anything to do with the ‘nay nay.’ We’re talking about good old rock ‘n’ roll making it’s way back to the main stage.
Last week two of the top ten spots on the Billboard Hot 100 were rock music. And yes, when I heard that I was blown away that it’s been that long since a measly two were in the top ten.
The two songs, you ask?
First up, Imagine Dragons with “Believer” at number seven:
And second, Portugal. The Man‘s “Feel It Still” at number ten:
The last time two separate bands did it was in early 2015 with Hozier‘s “Take Me to Church” and Fall Out Boy‘s “Centuries.” Since then, there was another time that two rock songs were in the top ten, but they were from one band, Twenty One Pilots, with “Ride” and “Heathens” in 2016.
What does this mean? In my world, the hope is that people are embracing rock music again. With bands like Foo Fighters, Greta Van Fleet, and Black Stone Cherry recently putting out heavy-hitting rock ‘n’ roll, it feels like the rock train is picking up steam again.
In the coming weeks, do you see more rock climbing the ladder? Who are you listening to? Tell us on Twitter.
