Remember last January when we chronicled the strange saga that eventually led to the end of Austin’s coffeeshop/music venue Strange Brew? That story had a sad ending for all music lovers, but the second tome of the saga promises a potential positive turn.

Since January, the South Austin space has remained vacant. However, Hyde Park coffee shop/bakery Quack’s announced via their Facebook page that they just signed a lease to take over the space and open their second location.

As the above post promised, in addition to having a ridiculously amazing name, the new Captain Quackenbush’s Coffeehouse and Bakery will reopen the music venue space as The Austin Soundroom.

The space won’t be an exact copy of the former Strange Brew. The new venue will actually be bigger, since they’re also taking over the neighboring property, which was also formerly owned by Strange Brew but they never followed through on renovations and expansion.

Strange Brew

Strange Brew was an award-winning music venue, but since its closing, many of its residencies have relocated elsewhere in the city. Hopefully, the new venue will be able to recapture the music that made it an essential stop in the Austin music scene, while also keeping the place on more solid financial ground.

Captain Quackenbush’s Coffeehouse and Bakery and the adjacent Austin Soundroom is set to open this summer at 5330 Manchaca Road, Austin, TX 78745.
