In a time when the music industry is constantly evolving, it’s important to support your local music scene. Visit local venues, jam out to artists from the area, and support independent record labels. Here’s a list of some really cool San Francisco record labels that are releasing awesome music.
5 San Francisco record labels worth checking out
Bright Antenna Records
This San Francisco Bay area indie label was started in 2007 by a group of friends with a dream. They began by releasing an EP and a 7-inch. Now, their artists have gone on to tour internationally and have been licensed for TV. Their current roster includes artists such as English rock band The Wombats and Philly indie pop band Cheerleader.
Father/Daughter Records
This record label is run by – you guessed it – a father and his daughter! Based in Miami and San Francisco, they run the label out of their homes, making the whole long distance thing work. The label is home to many local San Francisco artists such as Cocktails, Pardoner, and SOAR. Their list of acts also includes Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist Nnamdi Ogbonnaya and rock band SPORTS.
Zip Records
Founded in San Francisco in 1998, Zip Records also launched in Amsterdam in 2005. The label represents artists from multiple countries, boasting “artists from every continent (except Antartica).” They also have artists of varying genres including hip-hop, punk, pop, rock, world, funk, and classical. So, how does this all fit together? Their Facebook page states, “The thread which ties together the label’s releases may not be that apparent at first glance, but at least from the vantage point of Zip Records, each title has a sense of place – geographically as well as musically.” Check out artists such as Sabrina Starke, Edward Rogers, and Monique Klemann.
Popgang Records
Popgang Records was founded in 2013 in San Francisco, releasing both free and records for sale. This standout among San Francisco record labels mostly focuses on indie dance music, representing both bands and DJs. Popgang has released music from over thirty artists including Manics, Niteppl, and Tuxedo Gleam.
Dark Entries Records
Dark Entries is a unique record label. DJ Josh Cheon created the label in 2009 to release out of print or underground music that was never released. The label also releases new music from current underground electronic groups. Curious where the label’s name comes from? Dark Entries was the first 7″ released by UK goth band Bauhaus. Check out the label’s recently released Gay Pride Bundle featuring Krootchey, Looky Looky, Tobias Bernstrup, and 3 Teens Kill 4.
