To put it mildly, we are living in trying times. To put it less mildly, it seems like every time you turn on the news some truly fucked up shit is happening. Now more than ever, we need good, quality laughter. If you happen to reside in the Philadelphia metro area, comedy is in no short supply these days.
Thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign by club founders Aaron Nevins and Kate Banford, Good Good Comedy Theatre opened its doors in Fishtown late last year. Described by the founders as “Philadelphia’s home for live, mercilessly unpredictable independent comedy – seven nights a week,” the club is truly a space by comedy, for comedy.
The intimate BYOB theatre prides itself on being able to offer off kilter, experimental comedic acts that you would be hard pressed to find at a larger venue. The space gives off a welcoming vibe and the people that work there take pride in the establishment. Simple touches like being able to grab your own beer out of their fridge before the show add to the intimate feel of Good Good.
Spanning multiple genres of comedy from stand-up to sketch to improv, there is usually a hilarious show every night of the week. Many of the shows are built from ridiculous concepts that wind up playing out even more absurdly than they sound. For example, an upcoming show titled “Weeding Out the Stoned” features 16 comics, all but one of which are high. It’s then up to the audience to try and find the sober comic in the group. Audience interaction is a prominent feature in many of the performances here.
