If you live in a major metropolitan area, chances are you have a special relationship with that meal between breakfast and lunch. Sunday morning offers a myriad of tasty options and maybe even a few mimosas. In this regard, Philly is no different. The city best known for its cheesesteaks and beer also boasts a plethora of great early (or late) morning spots. Enjoy this introduction to some of the best brunch locales the city has to offer, presented in no particular order.
The Dutch – 1527 S 4th Street
The first restaurant on the list is one of my personal favorites. Chefs Joncarl Lachman and Lee Styer serve up unusual, yet satisfying combinations of breakfast comfort foods. The bruncherie, located in the Pennsport area, is tiny and quaint with a very bright and homey decor. The service at The Dutch has always been extremely personal and prompt, even when the place is packed. If you plan on going during the weekend, be sure to get there early as this spot is seriously tiny.
Harp & Crown – 1525 Sansom Street
The ambience of this place is really hard to match. Owners Michael and Nina Schulson specialize in transforming unsuspecting locations into functional art. The restaurant’s “glass-façade, 24-foot ceilings, and four chandeliers on the ground floor” paired with some vintage wallpaper, create a truly unique dining environment.
Oh yeah, and the food is phenomenal. All you can eat brunch from 10:30 to 2:30 every Saturday and Sunday. If you happen to be there later in the day, they even have a reservations-only bowling alley beneath the main dining room.
Wister – 26 N 3rd Street
This spot is particularly great if you feel the need for some Sunday morning hair of the dog. Wister has an interesting setup where you can BYO alcohol and they will provide the mixers, ranging from different juices to the ingredients for a bloody Mary. This might be one of the more expensive spots here, but it is definitely worth it. The eggs Benedict might be the best on the planet.
Mission Taqueria – 1516 Sansom Street
Some people might tell you that you can’t have Mexican food for breakfast. We don’t need that kind of negativity in our lives. Those people have obviously never had huevos rancheros (salsa soaked fried eggs over corn tortillas) from Mission.
The food here is presented beautifully in a bright, open layout, perfect for a morning trip with friends. Brunch is from 11:30-3 Saturday and Sunday.
Green Eggs Cafe – Multiple Locations
You can’t really get much fresher than herbs that were grown on the roof of your restaurant. Throughout their three locations, (South Philly, Northern Liberties, and Midtown Village) Green Eggs holds tight their eco-friendly philosophy.
They source their ingredients locally as much as possible and do their part to cut down on the restaurant’s waste. As if you needed even more reason to stop in, they serve an awesome breakfast menu everyday until 4 PM.
