Katherine Finn better known as Katie Kate is a force to be reckoned with. Originally from a small town in upstate New York, Kate grew up listening to hip-hop, performing in high school musicals, and learning to play instruments like the piano and flute.
Kate’s increasing interest in the traditional arts helped her escape the realities of living in a small town, but also allowed for her to set sights on a career in music. Shortly before graduation, Kate’s dreams became a reality as she accepted an offer to attend the Cornish Institute of the Arts to pursue a degree in classical piano.
Based on her resumé, many would probably assume that Kate would become classical pianist or at the very least stick to classical music. However, Kate is not your ordinary musician. Instead, Kate took convention and turned it on its head, applying her classical training to producing contemporary beats and overlaying it with her hip-hop inspired verses.
Her two albums titled Flatland and Nation are a true testament of this. Between the two albums there is a prevalent blend of hip-hop, electronic beats, experimental pop with a splash of Kate’s unique vocals and fierce rapping skills.
With the help of her good friend and dubstep producer Marcus Goodsell a.k.a. Dash EXP, Kate produced Flatland within the four walls of her bedroom. If there is any label that can be applied to her music, it’s probably lack of convention. Her unique blend often zigs right when you expect it to zag. It’s not often that a musician can say she can rap, sing, and produce her very own beats.
Nation was released just a few years after Flatland, and received praise from various media outlets such as The Stranger and The Ledger. The Ledger describes the second album perfectly,
“Compared to Flatland, Nation has more organic instrumentation by adding band members Trent Moorman on the drums and Lena Simon on Kairos to go along with her hip-hop beats. Nation has EDM backing beats and reveals her multiple identities.”
Kate’s determination has made her a stand-out artist in the Seattle scene. If any one artist can do it all, she can.
