If you’re currently unfamiliar with Rostam Batmanglij, it’s time to acquaint yourself. The Columbia-educated artist is a sort of musical renaissance man.
Rostam has made a name for himself within the music industry as a producer, songwriter, and composer. Best known for his Grammy Award-winning work in Vampire Weekend, he has also earned production credits for an eclectic group of artists. Rostam has had his hand in producing tracks by Carly Rae Jepsen, Charli XCX, and even the ephemeral Frank Ocean.
Taking leave from being a fulltime member of Vampire Weekend last year, Rostam has been allowed more time to explore his identity as a solo artist. With several solo tracks under his belt, he has returned with the beautiful “Gwan.” On the track, Rostam’s ethereal voice is buoyed by a cello arrangement as he mulls over the inner workings of his subconscious.
As part of a string of May dates, Rostam will be taking his solo act to the stage at one of Philadelphia’s favorite venues, Union Transfer. In support of Rostam will be Vampire Weekend-collaborator and former vocalist for Dirty Projectors, Angel Deradoorian. Her 2015 debut album, The Expanding Flower Planet, is a varied sonic journey with her voice acting as the anchor tying it all together.
